Choose garage or workshop size by laying out vehicles, equipment, work clearances and storage at full scale. Add space for the jobs you perform and the tools you plan to buy, not just the vehicles you own today.
Plan the connected decisions: steel garages, warehouses, mini storage units, climate-controlled self storage. Use the steel building buyer’s guide alongside straight answers about aircraft hangar planning, steel building cost, steel building cost per square foot and steel warehouse cost before you compare complete project prices.
Start with bay-by-bay use
Define each bay as parking, repair, fabrication, wash, storage or flexible work space. Size it for the largest truck, trailer or machine that will use it. Include mirrors, bumpers, open doors and safe walking room.
Do not trade away height
A tall door may still leave too little room for a raised vehicle, dump bed, RV air conditioner or overhead lift. Check eave height, rafter depth, door tracks and lights together. True clearance should be shown on the drawing.
Allow useful storage without crowding work
Reserve wall length for cabinets and racks, plus floor area for tires, attachments or long stock. A mezzanine can help in some designs, but it adds structural and access requirements. Price it as part of the building plan, not a later assumption.
